Killary Harbour

This fjord in Connemara in the west of Ireland, the only true fjord in the country, is a major centre of aquaculture. These lines of buoys, termed longlines, mark rope mussels of which about 80% are exported, mainly to France, UK and Italy. The rope mussel sector of aquaculture has suffered from lost stock and prolonged closures because of biotoxins in recent years, particularly in 2000. Efforts are continuing to explore how mussel production can expand from these enclosed sea loughs into more exposed locations.
