The Gal Vihara comprise the best known structures in Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. Made in the middle of the 12th Century from solid granite, there are four statues in all. The two northernmost are shown here. The standing Buddha is seven metres high and the reclining Buddha is 14 metres long. The latter is shown at the point of entering parinibbana. At one time these statues were enclosed within brick buildings and there are plans to restore these protective structures.
