Juggernaut
A
juggernaut in Trincomalee in northeast Sri Lanka. In Hindu festivals
this giant wheeled shrine, which has given the nickname to big trucks
in the west, is dragged around the streets surrounding around a Hindu
temple. This ritual has influenced the structure of many cities with
Hindi inhabitants as the streets around the temples must be made wide
enough to cope with these giant structures. The ornate carvings with
gold leaf can just be glimpsed through the protective sheets.
